Undertale features traditional role-playing video game gameplay with several differences. The game casts players in the role of a child as they explore an underground world full of monsters that they can either kill or befriend. As the game progresses, new elements are introduced, such as obstacles that require the player to stand still or move through them, and some boss battles also change the way the player's soul is controlled. Alternatively, they can use the Act option to perform non-violent actions, which vary depending on the enemy. If the player uses the right actions to respond to the enemy, they can choose to spare them and end the fight without killing them. The game features various story branches and endings depending on whether the player chooses to kill or spare their enemies, and it is possible to clear the game without killing a single enemy.
Frisk ventures through the Underground in order to reach the barrier - located in the castle of Asgore Dreemurr, the King of the monsters. Throughout the game, the player may decide whether to kill the monsters in their way or try to end fights peacefully, with consequences that affect the story's conclusion. Among the monsters that the player encounters are Sans, a wisecracking and slothful skeleton; Papyrus, Sans' enthusiastic yet incompetent brother; Undyne, the boisterous head of the royal guard, and Alphys, the kingdom's royal scientist. As the story progresses, it is revealed that human souls can be used to bypass or even destroy the barrier, and that Asgore has collected the souls of six humans (who had ventured in the Underground before Frisk) in an attempt to dispel the barrier and wage war with humanity; however, he still requires one more human soul for his plan to succeed. Frisk is also told a tale of the King and Queen of the underground (Asgore and Toriel), their son, Asriel, and Chara - another human who previously fell into the Underground and was adopted into the Dreemurr family. Chara fell terminally ill and as a final request asked to see the flowers of their old village; they died before this wish could be granted, however Asriel carried their body through the Barrier to attempt to honor the request posthumously. The humans of the village attacked Asriel in a panic, falsely assuming he killed Chara. Asriel manages to return to the Underground before succumbing to his wounds, leaving Asgore and Toriel childless and grief-stricken.
